1. For the first light, make sure you leave it lit for a minimum two hours or until the wax has melted all the way across the top of the candle. This is to ensure that the candle won't tunnel. (Tunnelling means that a crater forms stopping you from having a long lasting candle).
2, Make sure you trim your wick before each use to 5mm-6mm. You can use scissors or nail clippers or a specialised wick trimmer. Trimmed wicks will give you a cleaner, brighter burn.
